Research Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how ICT can be used for the Social Inclusion of the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), more specifically People with Visual Impairment (PWVI). ICT has changed lives of many, so PWDs are not the exception. ICT can be used as a means and medium for Social Inclusion of the disabled. This research is expected to provide a guideline to the policy makers, development workers, and supporting agencies for equitable participation of PWDs to access education and income generation using ICT based assistive technologies and available computer software.

Current research mainly focuses on how People with Visual Impairment (PWVI) can be mainstreamed in the society and can be empowered with the use of accessible computer software. It also includes some of the case studies on use of ICT by PWVIs for their empowerment and social inclusion.

‘Nepali Braille Converter System’ software, localization of AMIS software in Nepali, and development of an accessible website (compatible to JAWS with localized web accessibility guidelines: http://www.nawbnepal.org) for visually impaired have been developed during the research.

Nepali Braille Converter system is software developed for the social inclusion of the PWVI using ICT. It automates the translation of Devnagari/ Nepali text into Nepali Braille and prints it with the help of Braille Embosser.

Outcome of the research is an effort made by researcher for the social inclusion of PWDs- PWVI and developing some supportive ICT aids for PWDs in Nepal. Social Inclusion using ICT is the process to include PWDs in the society.
